The best, worst and most shocking moments of the 2023 Grammys (2023)

TIs65th Annual Grammy Awardswas held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Before the awards show, all eyes were on Beyoncé, who entered with nine nominations to see if she could break the record for the most honored artist in Grammy history, and she did. After winning four awards, he now has 32 awards to his credit, surpassing the previous record holder, the late director Georg Solti, who held the record since 1997 with 31 wins. Beyoncé made history after winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album and gave a tearful speech thanking the queer community and her uncle Johnny, who greatly inspired her 2022 album.Renaissance, as well as her husband Jay-Z and their children. It was a bit of a somber moment when the Recording Academy named Harry Styles Album of the YearHarry's house, and many criticized the institution for not giving the award to Beyoncé in all four awards.

The night wasn't just thatgreat victories and disappointments: There were high-energy performances throughout the show, including Bad Bunny, who opened the ceremony with "El Apagón" and the merengue bomb/banger "Despues de la Playa," bringing the rhythm of the Caribbean to the Grammy stage . Other highlights of the night included Brandi Carlile, Mary J. Blige, a moving memorial service with Kacey Musgraves, Quavo, Maverick City Music, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt and Mick Fleetwood, and a hip-hop anniversary tribute featuring a who's who . were of the kind (except for more than a few notable personalities).

Many won their first awards tonight, including Viola Davis, who earned EGOT status after winning Grammys for Best Audiobook, Best Narrative and Best Narrative, making history by becoming the third black woman to win the most coveted position in entertainment. Nigerian artist Tems received her first statuette tonight for her performance of Future's "WAIT FOR U," which won Best Rap Melodic Performance. Kim Petras made history as the first openly transgender woman to win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Unholy" with partner Sam Smith.

Throughout the evening there were many sweet moments (like introducing Brandi Carlile's wife and children), some awkward ones (more than a few jokes from host Trevor Noah), and many truly amazing moments. These are the best, worst, weirdest, and most shocking—and rightfully so, there were quite a few—moments at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

Most shocking: Harry Styles wins album of the year

Before Harry Styles was announced as the winner of the coveted Album of the Year award, there was a minute's silence throughout the stadium. Host Trevor Noah then opened the envelope and had one of Styles' fans read his name. Styles looked as surprised as anyone as he took the stage to accept his award. "Every artist in this category has inspired me so much at so many different times in my life," he said in his speech. "I'm so grateful." It was one of the most impressive moments of the night sincePeople Secondly social mediaI expected Beyoncé to win the biggest prize of the nightRenaissancesince he was snubbed in the past. This was his fourth album of the year nomination and the fourth time he's lost in the category, though it certainly wasn't a dull night for Bey...

Give him all the awards because he deserves them. The Recording Academy really wanted to right the wrongs of the past, even if the loss of the Album of the Year award drew both criticism and gratitude to the institution. At the awards ceremony last nightBeyoncéShe made history as the world watched her win the 32nd Grammy Awards during the televised portion of the ceremony, where she won Best R&B Song for "Cuff It" (though she has yet to accept the award) and Best Dance/Electronic song. Album. This final award was presented by James Corden, who acknowledged the historic moment. Accepting the award, he said: "I want to thank the queer community for their love and for inventing the genre."

Best of all: Bad Bunny's energetic opening

After Noah started the show, he took things elsewhere.bad rabbit, which immediately set standards in terms of performance. He called a group of dancers who made all the celebrities stand up while singing part of the anthem "El Apagón". They walked the aisles on their way to the main stage, where they wowed the audience with "Despues de la Playa". As if the show couldn't get any more dynamic, the stage was packed with a full band, a seaside backdrop and an even bigger crowd of dancers. Bad Bunny called his home country of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

During her performance, viewers watching with subtitles noticed that they had trouble keeping up with the Spanish lyrics as the words "Singing in Non-English" appeared on the screen:

Worst: Trevor Noah pranks

This is Noah's third host and his banter was better. Many of them were looking for fruits that were possible, such as the Chinese balloon incident, Trump learning Spanish for the Bad Bunny album, and Crypto.com with an escape plan in the Bahamas. To be fair, hosting is a tough job. But maybe it's time to do what the Golden Globes did to Jerrod Carmichael and try new talent.

Best of all: Kim Petra's historic win as an openly transgender woman

Sam Smith and Kim Petras received a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their collaboration "Unholy." Smith, already a Grammy winner, gave Petra the stage to accept the award on his behalf. "Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award as I am the first trans woman to win this award," Petras said. "I just want to say thank you to all the great transgender legends before me for opening those doors." He dedicated the award to Sophie, the Scottish producer and musician who died in 2023, who he said "told me this was happening and always believed in me".

Weirdest thing: fans argue over who should get album of the year

The biggest criticism of an awards show is almost always its length and tendency to drag on, and the unnecessary investment that is often the cause. This year, the Grammys decided to enlist the biggest fans of each Album of the Year nominee to defend their favorite artist. The first part of the segment featured fans of Beyoncé, Bad Bunny and Harry Styles, each passionate about their personal commitment to the artist they wanted to recruit. I didn't even have to see the rest of the place to know it would end up being my least favorite part of tonight's festivities. While we can see what the producers were up to, the focus group atmosphere was too forced and, let's be honest, a waste of time in an awards ceremony that's already three and a half hours long.

less common:Song selection by Lizzo and Harry Styles

Harry Styles performed "As It Was" at the 2023 Grammys

These two artists are very talented artists and have appeared in previous awards. In 2021, Styles oozed sexiness and impeccable timing in his "Watermelon Sugar" performance. Lizzo's amazing voice and dance moves paired with memorable visuals were showcased at the BET Awards in June 2022. But tonight's performances paled in comparison, even with Styles' dazzling ensemble. He played "As It Was" and everything felt dull and tuned. The performance felt like a departure from the electrifying performances he had given in his 15 concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York and The Forum in Los Angeles. The song that Lizzo wanted to perform, the title track of her album, "Special", was not what it should have been. Her voice is great and she could have chosen songs with Harry that were more appropriate for the occasion: 'About Damn Time' in the original version for Lizzo and 'Satellite' for Harry.

To celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, the Recording Academy brought together many of the biggest names in the history of the genre. The medley brought together everyone: Black Thought, Run DMC, LL Cool J, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Salt-n-Pepa, Flava Flav, Ice-T, Queen Latifah, Method Man, Big Boi, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and Nelly. for GloRilla and Lil Uzi Vert. Each artist had their time to shine and played excerpts from their most memorable songs. Some of the most memorable performances come from artists like Queen Latifah performing her iconic 1993 single "U.N.I.T.Y.", Nelly performing "Hot in Here" and Missy Elliot, of course, performing "Get Ur Freak On". The series received some criticism for not including enough notable women in the genre, such asLil Kim, Nicki Minaj, Eve, Trina και Megan Thee Stallion.

Even Bonnie herself was surprised when First Lady Dr. Jill Biden announced her as the winner of song of the year for "Just Like That". It took her a second to process the fact that she had beaten the biggest pop stars of the 21st century: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Adele, Kendrick Lamar and Lizzo. Raitt, whose last win was in 2012, kept his acceptance speech brief, explaining the inspiration behind the song and citing John Prine, whose popular "Angel From Montgomery" he covered, as an inspiration. Jazz singer Samara Joy's win was also a welcome surprise as she won best new artist, beating established artists such as Anitta, Omar Apollo, Wet Leg and Måneskin.
